Exhaust Center Muffler Hangers - replacement options? Posted by StoicBlue87 [Email] (#1829) [Profile/Gallery] (more from StoicBlue87) on Sun, 21 May 2017 22:42:53 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I was clambering beneath my '87 this morning, looking for the cause of an exhaust rattle or bump. And it seems one of my muffler hangers was completely split/rotten while the opposite side is probably within a few weeks of failing.
I had one backup in my stockpile to replace the rotten piece (see attached image).
My 900 is practically living a retired life here in Los Angeles with only a 24-mile round trip commute on decent roads and highways every other week (I'm driving two Saabs and I alternate weekly). No snow, no salt, no random road-rallies or cross-campus late-night hijinks. Just simple dry-pavement driving.
There's no reason why these hangers should decay/fail so quickly - I replaced these hangers only two years ago (they're Bosal from eEuro).
Has anyone ever gone rogue and replaced these things with an equivalent from another car type?
Or am I expecting too much and maybe replacement every two years is okay?
Or is this proof that there's an unseen but highly corrosive reality-TV substance lurking above the California roadways that eats up this kind of rubber?
I'm considering making some equivalent of my own using twisted steel wire and nicopress sleeves - wait, that wouldn't flex. Well, maybe cutting some shapes out of belted tires?
Am I the only person surprised by the fragility of these things?
