Hello,
Something else to look at would be the ignition module/amplifier and or hall effect sensor/crank sensor. I have seen them fail that way often. I usually car a spare ignition module and will plug it in when it acts up. Or you could check for spark or injector firing. This can cause the ignition time to jump or skip giving you a misfire.
Any misfire rich or lean can overheat the cat causing your sulfer smell. This can also kill the cat. I was always taught that a cat doesn't just die. There is always a reason weather that reason has been repaired yet or not. Ofcourse if your cat has already melted it is possible for it to move around in its housing and at times clog the exhaust completely. Good Luck, Bernie
