If you had the right flaring tool, I'll bet you could use a combination of compression adapters and hydraulic hose with JIC/AN flare fittings and make that rebuild task a DIY. Of course, those fittings and hose would probably cost more than $40, but OTOH you'd end up with a serviceable hose - you could just replace the hose section whenever it failed next. Even if you had to pay someone to flare the stock steel line, adding to the initial cost, the long term cost might end up lower.
