If you are using a jumper cable, connect it to the case of the alternator, and then the body ground, a rock solid bolt that has no paint on it.
Try a couple locations if that makes sense. What you are trying to do is rule out the ground cable you installed.
The alternator ground strap is normally down low on the pivot bracket, but you can jumper it to any good solid mount that translates to the body. Use a really stout wire on that with good connectors.
The point is that you want grounds to the engine and grounds to the body, through energy, you can't over do it:-)
