I spent the early afternoon troubleshooting this as Justin and Landjet have suggested. I waited for the car to warm up and for the fans to kick on which I confirmed is when it first begins to choke/cough.
Each time I followed the same process: wait for fans to come on, car chokes, turned off engine, connected jumpers, restarted engine, fans kicked on again.
Here are the results:
1. Connected jumper cable from battery to 2 different body grounds (hood hinge & unpainted metal where pass side wiper connects) - no change in symptoms.
2. Jumper from battery to lifting lug - no change (maybe worse?).
3. Jumper from alternator case screw to body ground & lifting lug - no change.
One additional behavior I noticed today is that it's not ONLY when the fans are on that the car chokes. By the time I got to the third grounding check, the car was coughing without the fans running and that's when I started to smell fuel...
Thoughts??
