Thanks. Will definitely bare that in mind. I suppose it's also because I'm new to circuit/electronics testing, assuming that where voltage readings are concerned they are supposed to read as indicated in order for things to operate. In this case it caused me some confusion when the solenoid operated correctly connected directly to the battery and is not operating connected to the APC box circuit.
The ground at the radiator cross member was one of the first things I checked and it tests fine. As mentioned, 11.6volts on a 12.5volt battery at the solenoid positive isn't too bad considering it's 30 years old.
I have a feeling you've nailed it. Either way, I'll let you know.
