FWIW, my experience has been the same as Notnoel's and Saabina's - take the elbow off and remove the sensor in a more comfortable environment. I've wasted money on various O2 sensor removal sockets, ground them down to make them fit, removed the passenger side headlight to get to the sensor .... and I always end up taking the elbow off to remove the sensor.
Be very careful to soak the nuts that fasten the elbow to the turbo with BP Blaster overnight and loosen them a fraction of a turn at a time, slightly turning them back and relubing them if they resist too much. You don't want to break a stud.
And, when putting it all back together, apply a good dab of anti-seize to the threads. Murphy says that, if you keep the car long enough, you'll need to redo the sensor.
