Coolant temp gauge problems Posted by Arabiflora [Email] (#1129) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Arabiflora) on Sat, 1 Jul 2017 20:00:14 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My (new to me) '89 900S was running hot and I opted to replace the radiator as remedy. The transplant was completed, I filled the system with fresh coolant, and took it for a 5 mile test drive. I had hoped the new radiator would prevent the dash gauge needle from creeping towards the red zone at operating temp (ambient temp ~75 degr). Little did I know how well it would work: I got no temperature at all.
That is, I seem to have somehow disrupted the temp sensing circuit(s). I've checked connections in the sensor located in upper radiator hose, looks good to me. I did replace the thermosensor fan switch that threads into the radiator with a new one, those connections look good, as well. However, immediately at the end of the test drive I shut her down and listened for the fan, no sign of life.
Bottom line: no dashboard temp indicator and no fan action when I expected it. Where to start with diagnosis? I did nothing with the upper hose sensor and connections look good; I replaced the thermosensor and those connections look solid, as well. I will confess that I have not yet followed thee Bentley manual to test the new thermosensor by immersion in hot water and continuity test using ohmmeter, for two reasons: (1) I'd hate to remove the new one and waste 1/2 gallon of fresh coolant only to find that it works as promised; (2) by my reckoning, I don't think the radiator sensor feeds to the instrument panel, so failure at that point doesn't readily explain lack of temp gauge.
I'm bummed and dare not drive blind during the summer without knowing engine temps are in tolerable range. Might there be a fuse I should look at? I'd forgotten both what a pleasure and a PITA working on these lovely cars can be-- especially if your skills are rusty, like mine. A little help here?
