I had a similar problem with my 88 900t - occasionally it would leak a lot then go for a while with very little leakage. After cleaning things up - as Simon suggests - the leak appeared to be coming from the hose connections to the reservoir. I cut off the rotten end of the return hose and re-clamped, and replaced the rotten large diameter supply hose with a new URO hose. This helped for a 2 or 3 months when leaks began again. The URO hose had already deteriorated; I replaced with a piece of Gates reinforced PS hose - this helped but still had a slight leak. Found an old post here that suggested using 2 clamps at the supply hose to pump connection - did that and so far no leaks for the last 3 weeks or so.
