Ryan, as noted above just tap on the exposed end of the rod. When the rod is reacted the round spring 'thingy' just falls off. It can be reused. The only tricky part is working out the black plastic tubular bushing. The weight of the bench creates some friction friction. I use one arm to hold up the bench and take the weight off the bushing to ease it out.
