Matt,
Thank you for posting at TSN!
The 1991 900T would employ the MITSUBISHI TE05 turbocharger which was an excellent workhorse with outstanding reliability.
In the case wherein there are changes to the turbocharger vocals upon vehicle acceleration, there may be a few potential common culprits:
1.) First, there could be turbocharger rotating assembly shaft movement which could cause the rotating turbine or compressor wheels to contact their respective housings. With the 900, remove the cast iron downpipe assembly and check the turbocharger turbine wheel for shaft movement. There should be minimal up/down float and also zero in/out(Thrust) movement found. Thrust is a common culprit with the TE05 turbocharger wherein the rotating compressor wheel is forced into the compressor housing causing a change in turbocharger vocals.
2.) Although a less common scenario, the TE05 turbine housings are subject to crack which could cause the cast iron housing to brake on the rotating turbine wheel creating similar vocals as mentioned.
Thanks again for posting at the TSN and we will look forward to hearing from you if you should have any questions!
Sincerely,
GSK at SDI
