1992 C900 5spd Turbo
How lucky can one guy be?
Power Steering Rack:
#1 Original OE to 143,835
#2 Scantech Refurb to 244,000 = 100,165
#3 ARC Refurb; I'll let ya know
Head gasket:
#1 Original to 137,750
#2 Elring to 245,445 = 107,695
#3 Elring; I'll let ya know.
Yes, there is about 1,500 miles between latest rack and head. I was waiting for the head to blow out so I could do them together, in December, on a gravel driveway in New England.
And yes, I had an Erikson Industries rebuilt transmission installed at... 200,600. I use Castrol GTX10W30.
How do I maintain Saab's predictive replacement interval for these dreaded jobs? My secret as follows...
Power Steering fluid? Anything but Honda. The pump will let you know what interval. Lucas stop leak straight up right now. The morning's are a workout.
Oil change interval; 10,000 to 20,000 miles. Castrol GTX 10W30. I bought a case (12) of the blue Saab OE filters 16 years ago. Still chipping away at 'em.
Coolant? Sometimes I just use water. And I'm not even talking distilled. When it gets close to winter I'll eye ball the color and green it up with some Prestone lowtox. (Puppy and a kitten on the label!)
Follow these tried and true methods and you too can replace a head gasket and steering rack on a gravel driveway in New England during the month of December.
I hope it snows. Then I'll have a story to tell.
