FWIW, I tried Hylomar recently and didn't find it tacky enough to hold the gasket in place. Admittedly, this was on a 9-3 where you need to flip the valve cover completely upside down vs. a c900 where it's just an angle, but it was unsatisfactory. On the last pass I used Reinzosil, which is Seriously Permanent and found a tiny bead held great. I had it leftover from replacing the valve body on a 9-3.
Reinzosil is great stuff - I am sure it's suitable for most places you'd historically use 518. Volvo, for example, uses it on their oil pans which are gapless flanges. It has exceptional characteristics and is easy to use as well. The downside of it vs. 518 is that it takes a long time to cure - 5-50 hours depending on conditions. Interestingly, Reinzosil is neither aerobic nor anaerobic - it actually reacts with humidity to cure. It'll cure real fast in Washington, make take some time in Arizona. ;)
Anywho, it's inexpensive, easy to use, and works pretty much everywhere. It's a one-tube solution.
