It is a common misconception that the rubber in a harmonic balancer is there only to absorb shocks to the belt-driven components. In reality, the rubber belts do this just fine. It's there to protect your crankshaft from fatigue and overstress. Here's how:
Each time a cylinder fires, a force acts upon the crankshaft, causing it to twist. But this force also causes vibrations in the crankshaft, and at certain frequencies, the shaft can resonate, which makes the vibrations even worse (constructive interference). These vibrations from the engine can become too much for the crankshaft to bear, causing it to develop cracks and fail prematurely due to fatigue.
This is where the harmonic balancer comes in. The harmonic balancer can be thought of as two concentric masses, separated by a flexible layer (the rubber), attached to the end of the crankshaft to help absorb vibrations by oscillating out of phase with them. It is tuned for your specific engine by rubber thickness and ratio of the outer mass to the inner one. It's usually connected to the crank pulley, but some cars have it separate.
I would never use a solid metal harmonic balancer if the factory used a rubber-separated one.
