Hello,
Thank you for posting!
The SAAB B202 cylinder heads are well known for pitting due to the use of Glycol based coolants which could become acidic, and a majority of these cylinder head assemblies have been in service for over 30 years.
Pitting is not uncommon, but you will want your machine shop to insure that this is not over any sealing surfaces/areas, which could lead to problems, in the future. If pitting is minor, many shops weld at the aluminum casting before machining. If the pitting is questionable, most opt to replace the cylinder head as there are many that would fit this era.
Also, you may want to check the cylinder head combustion chambers for a sharp edge which is common after machine work is accomplished. This edge should have no sharp edges which could cause issues relative to hot spots within the combustion chambers, upon installation. These edges should be removed prior to installation via use of a small file or de-burring tool, prior to installation.
Best of luck with your project!
Sincerely,
GSK at SWEDISH DYNAMICS, INC.
