The thing is, the ignition switch unit is not under the key cylinder, it's forward a few inches. If you could lift the console a bit you might be able to see it (the wires are coming out of it. Maybe some electrical contact cleaner could be used (disconnect the battery first). Since it is electrical certain cleaners could be an issue. You need to let the cleaner evaporate first.
It was amazing how much force I applied and the key would not move, but once this tiny bit of corrosion was released, and I do mean tiny, it turned easily.
