As a guess, I'd say the transmission has 130,000-140,000 miles on it. Mine went out just like that. Happened in traffic at a stop light. I was able to put it into reverse, then back into drive and it managed to make it back to my driveway. Then, as if it knew it were its time, it never rolled under its own power again.
I did the 5-speed conversion, and have always been glad I did. A much better gear ratio and more fun to drive.
