1 mm axial play is not bad.
Yesterday, I replaced the intermediate steering shaft on my '89 SPG (non-airbag). The steering on this car has been sloppy since I bought it. The sloppiness has grown to about 5 mm at the edge of a standard wheel and was due to a badly-worn lower U-joint. It was so sloppy that, when passing a semi at highway speeds, the truck's front-wake would push the car sideways - that doesn't happen with my convertible.
With the new intermediate shaft, there's only about 1 mm of play in the wheel, like you describe on yours. I think most of that play is in the shaft between the steering wheel and the intermediate shaft.
It's good to have tight steering again.
