I think Alex you are considering the original pressure plate lined with TABS under which you fit the spacer tool. The spacer tool does indeed fit around inside the casing of these replacement plates when the fingers are compressed in a press. Following is an image of a couple original pressure plates.
We find these replacement pressure plate springs weak when compared to the original version. The clutch pedal is very easy to press. I don't like it. I'm going to be putting back my original pressure plate the next time I'm in there.
