My exact memory of the details of this has gone along with my hair, but on earlier cars there was a problem where if the back end of the radio was not supported so it sagged at the back, when defrost (?) was selected, the vacuum diaphragm would hit it and lift it just enough to short out the power to the fan. Start the car and move the selector switch back and forth while watching the radio. If it moves ever so slightly, then that is your problem. Don't know about new resisters but should be lots of used ones available.
Alaska must be where old c900s come to be reborn. They are the perfect Alaska car and there are many of them still in daily use up here, many with insane mileage on them. I have nine nice ones, saved because I never want to drive anything else for daily.
