If you are getting some kind of signal from the original fuel level sender, you should pull that and inspect it. The bottom can separate from the cap and cause some strange issues. They can even completely separate and you may have an old one or two banging around inside the tank. If stuff is in there floating around, your older-style sender could have got dented or misaligned. That happened to one of mine. The thin aluminum canister got a dent in it, and the internal float couldn't clear it sometimes and would get stuck. It was sporadic and jumpy.
