O2 sensor fell off Posted by IrieTom [Email] (#1032) [Profile/Gallery] (more from IrieTom) on Mon, 29 Oct 2018 05:13:54 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I loaned my beater 90 900S to a friend, and heard from her that the car had suddenly gotten a lot louder "like a Harley"
The car in question has unknown mileage, certainly 300,000+ (I bought the car 7 years ago with a broken odo reading 202,000 and the previous owner said the odometer was broken when he bought the car. I've driven it at least 100,000 miles myself)
I went to look at the car (outside in the dark at night with just my cellphone as a flashlight) and after starting it up, the noise was coming from the downpipe area and I couldn't see anything wrong from above. When I looked from the side of the car I could see the oxygen sensor dangling by its wires, and proceeded to turn the car off and leave.
I'm going to go back later with a jack/stands so that I can get underneath and take a better look. In the meantime, I figure that I'd ask if anyone has ever experienced this type of failure before. I've driven c900s for over 30 years and never heard of an o2 sensor just falling out. Everything I've heard about o2 sensors on this bulletin board indicate that they are attached to the exhaust pipe so securely that it takes supernatural intervention to remove one, so I'm curious as to how this one just seemingly popped out like a champagne cork. I suspect that I'll find the threaded bung from the pipe still attached to the o2 sensor.
If so, I expect that I'll need to replace the downpipe and the o2 sensor. Could it be that simple? Have I missed anything important in the dark?
