Okay, that makes sense.
I *think* you have the wrong canister there - I think that one is from an 8v car, which is not unusual since Saab was selling both 8v and 16v cars in '85. This is from memory - I don't have one to look at - but I am pretty sure that all 16v cars have a canister with three ports - the vertical port that is the feed from the tank, a large (3/8"?) hose that connects to the side of the intake manifold, and a small vacuum hose that connects to the top. I imagine it would work with the older style simple check valve, but it wouldn't be ideal. You can google Saab PN 7532054 to see what I'm talking about.
