Thanks for the responses.
The unit is brand new and all was immaculate when I installed it. I know tapered fittings tend to be very sensitive to dirt, even the slightest amount can cause issues.
I've been taking my time with it and tightening it up daily after finding a leak. I've got to 18 foot pounds and it seems to have stopped. I've never tightened a tapered fitting that tight, never dared to, but I know it's clean so I thought well, what the heck.
