Clayton Parks, a rep from Bar's Leaks, responded to our earlier thread, now on page two of this BB. Since so many seemed interested there, I thought I'd re-post it on a new thread. He has sent me a PDF and a JPG pertinent to ATSM tests via email that I or Clayton can forward to anyone (i.e., John and BillJ) who may be interested. Clayton's email address is cparks@barsproducts.com.

I have read through most of everyone's posts on the subject of Bar's Leaks. First, I am not going to tell you I am unbiased, as I am the VP of Product Development for Bar's Leaks. What I am going to tell you is the facts as we have them and have been using since 1947. Our cooling system products are available in many forms; pelletized, liquid, powder and tablets (which is what the car companies buy). The formula has basically been the same since 1947 with the active ingredient called Rhizex. We use the same formula for the car & truck manufactures as we do for the aftermarket under our Bar’s Leaks name. Some of the manufacturers that use our products include GM, Saturn(GM), DaimlerChrysler, Ford, Jaguar(Ford), Aston Martin(Ford), Navistar(IH), Caterpillar, and many others. Bar’s Leaks is the only product that is used and approved for use by these companies mainly because we are one of the only companies meeting the spec they require. This spec requires a dry and wet test. The dry test must have no trace particles retained on a #20 or #30 mesh screen and only a trace on a 40 mesh screen. The wet test can only have 0.5% retained on a #30 mesh screen. An example of this is Ford Engineering Specification ES-F6SE-19A611-AA. Why are the car companies using our product? The company was founded in 1947 by an inventor named Fred Barton. Fred was trying to develop a product to increase the life of water pumps. What Fred found was by adding a few more ingredients, it made a great stop leak also. Buick started using the product in the 50’s to increase their water pump life. What they found out was it also decreased other cooling system problems. The Rhizex particles are so fine the will lubricate the water pump seal, help control pH and electrolysis problems in coolant, seal internal leaks (seeping head bolts), seal external leaks (core plugs) and seal coolant to oil leaks (porosity seepage through aluminum and cast iron). Some one mentioned ASTM tests, among other things. ASTM D 3147 is one test method for stop leaks. I have a copy of how the test is done and also the results of the test with our products if anyone would like that emailed to them. The basic results are that Bar’s Leaks will plug a .015 hole and still go through a #30 screen with no retained particles and no gum or gelling. If a cooling system is dirty or partially clogged, you never want to use any stop leak type product without flushing the system first. Rhizex also has a cleaning agent that helps keep the cooling system clean if used regularly. I am open to answer any questions either on this site or just email me. I will monitor this conversation over the next few weeks and hope I can help. One last thing, besides automotive used, we are big in the industrial side being used in boilers, solar panel systems, geothermal systems, heated floors, and many other area’s. The biggest problem Bar’s Leaks faces is that if someone uses a competitive product and has a problem, they blame it on us.
