Ticky valves can be lifters (all too common) or even a bent valve due to simple install incompetence.
BUT if it predates the recent work .. it isn't likely a bent valve :-)
Possibly they reused the old (iffy?) lifters?
Beyond that it could even be damaged sprockets.. something that rotates, clearly.
Buy new lifters and fit them?
But try a needed oil/filter change.. First.
