My dipstick is wrong?

I checked the oil this morning and it read about halfway between MIN and MAX (cold engine, flat ground) and I was thinking that is where it should be but... I added a bit of oil anyway (1/3 of a quart maybe) so that the dipstick now reads to the "M" on MAX. The valve tick that I was hearing seemed to have quieted down quite a bit and after driving to work, I could barley hear it at idle and when I brought the rpm up a bit in neutral it seemed to go away completely :) I guess Ill just monitor it for a while but it seems happier now... I had also cleaned up the valve cover and am not seeing any oil leaks in that area like I thought I had. Next nice day Ill give the whole engine bay a good cleaning to keep a closer eye...
