crazy-making intermittent fault ?! Woof !!! Posted by vtsnaab [Email] (#26) [Profile/Gallery] (more from vtsnaab) on Tue, 10 Apr 2012 13:21:01 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi Folks.
I was on my way to work, stopped at the store, came out, and my beloved '94 Aero started right up as usual - then quit a few second later.
Uh-oh.
Tried again - it cranked & shivered but didn't 'catch'.
Listened for fuel pump sound...none.
Waited & re-tried (twice), same result.
Called for a flatbed to come get me & it.
Sat & waited, and when I saw him entering thought to make some light so I'd be easier to pick out - and as a knee-jerk reaction cranked the car...
And it started.
Got out & met the operator & told him - but wasn't sure because since my last fuel pump change (~1 year ago, a used spare) the fuel gauge has been stupid so I go by the trip-meter for a better idea of fuel level, and it was almost time to gas up.
He suggested following me to the station about a mile up the road...and this we did.
Put in a few gallons - went to pay - came out - cranked - no start.
Had it towed home.
Weather allowing I've cleaned out the hatch, getting ready to install another good spare.
Since more than a day has passed - went out & turned the key on and fuel pump noise was evident => started & ran it a few minutes.
SO:
There's quite a list of 'possibles...ign switch, CPS, FP relay, pump itself and I'm sure there's others besides.
The question:
How to isolate this intermittent problem MINUS multiple tow-jobs driving me & anyone else nutz ?
Help, please ??!
Thanks.
