Maybe what happened is that one of the short plastic tubes that links the two-part rubber heater hoses has crumbled and parted.
In age, that plastic crystallizes or parts of it leach away or it mineralizes, anyway it gets very brittle. They can be replaced with short sections of 3/4" copper tubing, someone has posted on here.
Can be got at without too much trouble, with aquarium tank cover removed and the section of false firewall moved or removed.
If it were me I'd at least open it up and see if that's it, and if so I'd probly just replace both of them and let everything else wait till it goes bad.
