here's a link to the procedure I wrote a coupla years back. The a/c was dead on the car I did it on so I pulled the evaporator too. Makes the whole job MUCH easier.

With a massive failure you'll probably have coolant in the fan housing so plan on time for a lot of cleaning.

It's not the terrible job people claim, just takes some time and you have to be careful about some of the parts, which can tend to break off.
