Head gasket or catalytic converter?

96 Aero with 220K . Without any load noise etc. car just stopped on me with a strong smell coming from beneath the vehicle. If I attempted to push the gas peddle, it would stall, however if I allow the car to idle, it will continue to run although very rough. Without time to have it diagnosed, I've let it set for six months and I just went out to start it and it fires right up but once the smell begins, she wants to cut off on me. Any ideas before I take her to the dealer next week?
