Whatever insurance adjusters end up putting down as cause, I always figured cars burn for the same reason they keep turning up in quarries and off the ends of piers.

As flammable as car interiors and wiring and the fuel and oil are, igniting anything is pretty hard and not at all likely in a modern properly worked-on car.

Every automaker has been trying hard to avoid any possibility that their products would catch fire, since the days of flaming Pintos and actually long before. The likely punishing cost if a jury could be convinced the design had anything to do with a fire has made them very cautious in design matters.
