AutoZone is not consistent about this policy from store to store. The first time I bought a 34R from them I walked in with a dying 34R from Interstate and they sold me their 34R no questions asked. They even knocked about $20 off the price because the 34R they had in stock was manufactured 8 months previously and I refused to pay full retail for a less-than-fresh battery. The second time I walked in with AutoZone's dying 34R and got a "free" 34R replacement. The clerk asked me what I was putting it in, and I told him a Saab 9000. He didn't look up the car and didn't object.
My '96 Saab manual simply specifies a 12v battery with 70AH capacity.
According to the Carquest battery application guide the 34R fits the '89-91 Saab 9000, '04 Kia Amanti and '89-91 Sterling 827. For the Acura NSX it lists group sizes 24F and 35 but not the 34R. But some other battery retailer very well might "officially" list a 34R for a NSX.
Some Miata owners use the 34R, but I don't know if that is "official".
