I have a well loved and maintained 1996 9000 cse turbo 5 spd manual, recently had a grumbling under the hood inspected by my Saab specialist and was told it is the trans axel in the transmission and I might get between 2 weeks and 8 months of driving before it dies entirely. I love the car, its got 192,000 miles and is not rusted. I would love to keep it and am deciding whether replacement of the transmission is feasible money wise and worth doing, I also have re torqued the head to avoid head gasket replacement thus far and have a slight rear main seal leak like most cars of this age. Do not leak enough oil to even notice between changes as yet. Am wondering if anyone that knows more under the hood than I do could tell me whether if they are in changing the tranny out I could have them do the main seal and head at the same time as things are already opened up? I know those parts are cheap, its a labor issue so I'm thinking maybe I can sort of gut the whole thing in one fell swoop and get significantly more time from my much loved vehicle? Perhaps as its a manual tranny it will be cheaper/easier to replace? Thoughts?
