Yeah, the one he's describing as by the bellhousing would be the one in the thermostat housing - thats the one the EDU uses to control the fan, and drive the gauge.
It sounds like the insulation on the wires from the sender maybe bad? at any rate, its probably a cheap fix to just replace it.
fwiw, the second sensor between the intake manifold runners, is pretty much only used for cold-start by the fuel computer.
