I posted a couple days ago about my A/C (Thanks again to those who helped) but haven't had a chance to tackle it yet due to some weird things that have been occurring.
First, on Sunday I replaced both the O2 sensor (my car is a 1991 N/A 2.L with 186,000 miles) and the coolant temperature sensor- the one under the manifold, not the side of the engine- and also regapped the spark plugs to 0.89 (they have about 6,000 miles on them). Sunday was a nice sunny day, and the car ran just fine the rest of the day. However, the following morning when it was cold it started up just fine and ran well, but after driving a bit the check engine light came on (still ran smoothly) and after another 20 minutes, as it was pulling back into the driveway and put into park, it began to shake and sputter and misfire a lot, which is was not noticeably doing while driving. It was all highway driving before that point, so no stoplights to tell how it was idling.
That night, I restarted it again and it was running rough still, so I checked the 02 sensor (still on tight) and then disconnected the battery and replaced the DI cassette with a spare. Came back after a couple hours, and it started up just fine, ran great, with no CEL any more! It wasn't used the next couple days, but last night I went out to check again, everything still seemed fine.
So, my fiancee drove it to work this morning, and when she got to work (about 45 minutes away, almost all highway) and put it into park, it went crazy again.
I don't know what to do at this point:
1) Check spark plug gap again? Although I can't imagine that's the issue since it is fine sometimes..
2) Put back in the old O2 sensor, as maybe this one is bad and when the car heats up it throws a code that makes the computer run improperly until reset? The old O2 sensor was original as far as I know, so may have not been accurately reporting conditions.
3) Disconnect the coolant sensor, to see if maybe that one is bad? Although I think it only matters when the car is cold?
Again, while driving, nothing seems amiss even after the CEL comes on, only when stopped.
Looks like a may need to buy a membership to this forum, at this rate I might be on here often :)
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!
