1998 Saab 9000 CSE 5 speed 217,000 miles
See previous post, I had been concerned about a strange "growling" noise that appeared immediately after startup, persisting for 1-2 seconds. My initial concern was that the noise had to do with the starter, perhaps not disengaging from the flywheel....
I now know that the noise was actually the worn bearings in my power steering pump. Ask me how I know...
I know because the PS pump failed, and after I replaced it, the noise has gone away.
Details: First I noticed noise from the steering mechanism. Second noticed drop in PS fluid. Third noticed PS reservoir would not hold fluid. Also observed PS fluid leaking onto/around front passenger tire...then PS failed completely, with loud noise coming from area where I believed PS pump to be...it is located below the alternator.
Resolution: Removed PS pump from parts car (also a 1998 CSE, 186,000 miles). Removed dead PS pump and replaced with used (but "known good") pump from parts car. Noise is gone, power steering works fine, no leaks.
OK, OK, I know I am just asking for trouble, putting a well-worn part in. But I have a parts car for a reason, it will last for a while, and if it fails, I now know I can do a replacement in a couple of hours time.
From previous posts, I learned that people mistakenly replaced the alternator, only to learn that the PS pump was the culprit. I knew the alternator was not the problem by keeping a close eye on the voltage of the charging system. It did not budge from 14.2 volts, so even though I suspected the alternator, I was not that concerned about it. I now know the correct technique is to use a mechanic's stethescope (or a piece of tubing directly into your ear) to pinpoint the source of noise.
I will make a separate post regarding the PS Pump replacement.
