I used to be able to eke out 40mpg on the edu with my 89s with 195/60-15s over a 30 mile average 50mph stretch. It had several up and down hills but no significant change in elevation. Tail wind was a real plus. Couldn't do it if there was traffic though.
I remember reading as a kid about the 1950s Shell Economy Runs. Some drivers would spin their tires starting off and accelerate hard. Seemed counterintuitive but the explanation was they were trying to get into third (top gear back then) as quickly as possible.
It would be fun to put a boat tail and rear fender skirts on a 9k.
