True story: once averaged ~45-47mpg in a 1997 9000 CS (Low pressure turbo automatic) during a road trip to the grand canyon a few years back. Held it there for a good 470 miles or so too.
The tricks were; very long, flat stretches of fresh asphalt (South Western USA of coarse). A/C off (ECON mode). Cruise set at just around 60-65mph. Premium fuel fills only. And a very finely tuned engine (new O2 sensor, new spark plugs, new air filters, fresh fluids (oil and ATF), and closely monitor tire pressures of ~37PSI (cold).
Also probably helped; was our cleverly organized cargo for equalizing weight-distribution. Two equally proportioned guys in the front seats. Back seats folded down and our camping gear arranged to balance the load over the rear axle.
Didn't last long though because its too easy to break the optimum speed range when you are "trying to make good time". The engine liked humming along at around 75-80mph most of the time. Just slightly above the prime fuel economy RPM range.
Hypermiling is a subtle art indeed that requires acute driving skills and senses
