New compressor Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Mon, 7 Apr 2014 18:15:20 In Reply to: A/C compressor rebuilders?, TomR 98CSE, Sun, 6 Apr 2014 14:08:06 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Las summer I went with a new UAC ("Universal Air Conditioner") #8052C compressor, available on the big auction site for about $125. It is a perfect bolt-in, no modifications needed.
I was a little reluctant (it is a Chinese-made unit), but the reviews I could find for UAC brand compressors were good overall, so my Rambler Mentality got the best of me and I bought one. It has been fine so far, but I carry a short serpentine belt in the trunk just in case it decides to self-destruct at some point.
Bear in mind that if your old compressor has failed internally to the point where shrapnel has gotten into your AC system, the condenser will need to be replaced as well as the drier. (The parallel condensers used on R134a systems cannot be flushed out since the flushing compound just routes around the debris.) These are not terribly expensive parts but they are a PITA to install.
