since there is no metal to metal contact. The entire shaft floats on a film of oil. The key is:
Use only synthetic oil, change at recommended intervals. Dino oil builds up a layer of carbon in the hot areas (turbine side), no matter how frequent the oil is changed. Sooner or later it'll display the smokey-joe symptoms.
Allow engine to reach operating temperature before stomping on the loud pedal.
Allow engine to idle at least 30 sec before shutting down, regardless if it's water cooled or not.
Don't operate outside the limitations (excessive boost), this will shorten the life of your thrust bearing. The compressor wheel then acts more like a propeller and will pull against the thrust bearing wearing it out. You can take it from an extreme high mileage, very spirited driver who has never had a turbo fail (yes, I purposely destroyed one once just for gathering my own empirical data... it was already more than 400k miles old anyway).
