57Chev: Removing and replacing the switch is pretty easy. You can do a search on this bulletin board and find some pretty good how-tos. As I recall it, the drill is:
Remove the plastic bottom shroud under steering wheel. A few screws, torx I think, up in wells. Look up with a light to find them.
Then with a set of metric hex keys, you release two very small set screws either side of the switch, at back of key cylinder, by loosening them most of the way.
Then you also need I think a little slack on the wiring, which plugs to the switch with a massive multi-plug with big bullet connectors. I think you snip a wire tie to get a little play.
Then switch works down and out, and multiplug pries off. Replacement is reverse of removal.
Some have posted on here about success cleaning up internal contacts. To get it apart you have to drill out a couple riveted-over posts of pot metal, then the plastic cover unclips and opens. I've never gotten into it to clean them up; that takes some care and attention to small parts and detail. I don't think spray cleaner would get in far enough to do it, calls for actually polishing the contacts with very fine sandpaper, 400 grit maybe.
You can I think buy new ones at site sponsor parts places, or junkyard or ebay used good ones.
I think your car's is identical to the much later years.
