Yeah, I think the overheating might have been going on for a week or more. Almost all my driving these days is short hops, 5-10 minutes each, with stops of many minutes to half an hour or more. So if it was happening, it wasn't extreme. But probably let coolant keep boiling and dropping.
With the buffered temp gauge, the needle was I think usually sitting just where it should, though probably the coolant was dangerously low.
About every Sunday I drive 60 miles, with usually a few pit stops, but sometimes all the way non-stop. Then later a return trip. No trouble on any of my trips till Saturday, speeded up a day this week.
I was on my way to a party and kind of late so I wasn't being as attentive as maybe I would have been. Anyway, the car drove fine, never a miss, maybe not as peppy as it should have been but not acting up and no clouds of white smoke. Probably because coolant was all but gone.
After I recognized the problem and got it running I didn't notice any steam clouds either. I had refilled with straight water as I pretty well knew it was going to be leaking it out. Maybe it was losing so much there was no chance for it to turn to steam it was pouring into the cylinders so fast.
The tow truck driver told me water poured out of the tailpipe when he hauled it up on his ramp truck. That's probably what was making it so hard to restart it and keep it running when slowing down.
I'll be draining oil tomorrow, and last of coolant if any is there.
The plan is to first fix up an '88 C900 I have and register it as an antique, to have something to drive, then turn to the 9000. Maybe I'll never get to it, I liked the C900 a lot. And it has a sunroof.
