Based on your comment that you have been running with the brass fitting loose/out for two weeks, the ECU may have run its adaptation window into an undesirable corner. I would not disassemble the trans just yet.
Insert the brass fitting and epoxy the connection. It will take six hours for JB Weld to dry, overnight is better. Disconnect the negative battery cable for two of these hours to flush the current adaptation memory. When the epoxy is dry, reconnect the IAC hose and battery cable, and start up the engine. You will have to do another adaptation run. See if the engine shifts at more reasonable rpm levels, it should get smoother as the ECU stores new data.
Failing to make a difference in shifting, then proceed with Nat's testing of the transmission valves/cable.
