Significant oil leak question Posted by vvack0matic [Email] (#1443) [Profile/Gallery] (more from vvack0matic) on Sun, 20 Jul 2014 15:32:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Purchasing the car the old owner believed the shifter shaft seal was bad and leaking oil from the gear box. I asked when's the last time it was checked he said long ago and should be topped off. Getting the car home I did the procedure in pulling the check and fill bolts from the box. Come to find the gear box was not low at all, it didn't need any.
The motor looses about a quart every 4000 miles doesn't burn any. The only place that is showing signs of oil loss is at the shifter shaft.
Today I was under the car while it was idling and there is a steady stream of dripping oil that looks to be coming from the drain plug but upon closer inspection the steering rack above the oil pan is drenched in fresh oil, following the trail of fresh oil appears to be dripping from the back of the starter. The block sensor that's located just to the upper right has no signs of fresh oil, there isn't any oil on the starter servo above the starter motor.
So question is, could the seal behind the flywheel be so bad that when the motor is at idle it leaks oil by way of the starter and then out of the shifter shaft area while the cars in motion?
Quite allot of oil leaks off the starter while the cars sitting still idling it can make a nice puddle on the ground. The shifter shaft has signs of fresh oil but dose not drip oil while the cars sitting idling. Can the flywheel seal send motor oil by way of the starter?
