I always like to finish the loop on my threads.....
I got my parts from Audio Lab in GA, two Toshiba transistors, heat transfer goop and a kit with desoldering wick and solder. I also bought a nice solder sucker....always wanted a solder sucker.
It took me less than 30 minutes to get the fan controller out and on the kitchen counter/repair bench. It took me a few minutes to figure out how to get the heat sink off the back and to remove the card from the plastic case. There is a small phillips head screw that you need to access through the circuit card to free the heat sink and a small phillips head screw that holds the card to the case. Removing the transistor from the circuit card was easy, just desolder the three legs and it came right off. I checked the transistor with a meter and two legs were shorted together. I checked the new one and they were all open between legs. By the looks of the solder joints, it had been replaced before. Soldered in a new one and it was ready to reassemble. It's a little finicky getting the hole in the transistor to line up with the threaded hole in the heat sink. Make sure you don't mix up the screws and then try to fix the "stripped hole". You have the wrong screw dummy! I went through that excercise and reinstalled the controller before realizing I had an extra screw left over with that white heat tranfer goop on it and realized I used the wrong screw. I did the whole job a second time with the exception of the soldering part in about 20 minutes. I think I could do this whole job in 45 minutes, start to finish now.
Started it up and it works great. After that it was on to replacing a broken door handle on my 04 GMC crew cab pickup. Whoever designed that cheap plastic piece of crap door handle should be tied to a post and shot.
If you ever lock your keys in your GMC/Chevy late model truck, just give the handle a good tug and you're in.
