I've got a '93 Aero with 96,000 on it. A one owner, (62 year old woman) well taken care of car. It had a nagging oil smell, windows down at a stop in traffic. No leaks in the driveway, no big oil mess under the car. Well, lo and behold the rear main seal was the culprit. It leaked slowly over the top of the cat and burned off, never leaving a drip in the driveway.
I dreaded the thought of taking it all apart for a twenty dollar seal.Three weeks ago my clutch master failed and caused the pedal to sink to the floor in traffic and stay there! Well, I was able to get it back home and ordered myself up a brandy new clutch master. Once installed, during the process of bleeding it, the slave cylinder blew out! That was three weeks ago. My 96,000 mile Aero now has; a new clutch, a new pressure plate, a re-surfaced flywheel, a new slave cylinder, a new line from the clutch master to the slave and a new clutch master. While I was in there doin' all that, I threw in the new rear main seal as well. All done, all Saab parts, all good, no more leaks.....If it weren't for the failed clutch business, I would have let that rear main leak until it became an "ISSUE".......I've read here in the posts that rear main and front seals as well are a fairly common problem with these 9000s. (I'm a 900 guy like yourself and I liked your take on looking under the 9000 hood, "It looks Alien to me"....yup! Cheers,Bob
