I bought my 94 Aero with a Reverse issue where it was sometimes not able to get smoothly into gear. The PPI the indie did was inconclusive, but that most likely it was an internal problem that would lead to failure. I drove it for over 18mos and not once did it go into Reverse properly on the first attempt.
It's a weird scenario. Prices tend to go like this (labor not included):
$500-700 - Used replacement trans (Mystery box)
$1500-1800 - used/rebuilt
$2800+ - new
Do NOT get a rebuilt box. I learned the hard way that "rebuilt" means different things. They ONLY replace the obviously damaged or failed parts. They don't have a set list of common things that need to be replaced. So, you might get a rebuilt box where the 3rd gear syncro fails in ~6mos (after the warranty). Or, like me, the $2 plastic speedo gear inside the trans will fail, rendering you without a speedo or odo until you open the box and replace it (Guess what, about $1200 to replace the $2 plastic gear).
The biggest pain in the process (it;'s been two failed transaxles in ~10yrs for me) was sourcing a replacement. My advice is to just start looking for replacement to have on hand when the failure occurs.
