Stereo Recommendations? Compatible w/ C-bus? Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Wed, 27 Aug 2014 19:29:01 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Starting yesterday, the Clarion head unit on my 1994 Aero has been asking for the code incessantly. I can enter the code and sometimes the antenna goes up, but it asks again for the code - very infrequently the radio will play for a while, then ask for the code. Cleaned and reseated all of the connectors, no change - if anything it's getting worse, so I'm assuming that the head unit is dying. I have a spare head unit that has been sitting around for years, tried that and it won't even accept the code - so I'm assuming they have both died from old age. I'd send it out to be fixed, but can't wait two months (typical Saabradio turn around time) without a radio in my daily driver, so it's probably time to upgrade.
I have a working Clarion-SAAB six CD changer in the trunk and would like to keep that function. Does anyone make a head unit that still uses C-bus and can control the CD changer? I can't find any, Crutchfield told me that CD changers are dinosaurs.
Alternatively, are there any head units that people here are generally happy with? I have read good things about the Nakamichi units, but they don't appear to have any auxiliary inputs in case I want to plug in my (non-iPhone) phone. I don't need Pandora, bluetooth, or XM compatibility, also want to minimize bling.
Finally, is the Nokia-made rear speaker amp worth keeping? Modern receivers have high power ratings and usually for four channels, but these values are of course subject to inflation - one might imagine that a dedicated rear amp works better?
