Well we went ahead and pull the head off today.
Also removed turbocharger. It had a decent amount of water in the turbine wheel housing.
With a straight edge on the head we could fit a .022 feeler gauge in between the cylinder areas. We we assume the head is warped and John so we're going with a good used head. Taking it to machine shop for valve seal replacement cleaning and testing.
Interestingly it looks like the original Mitsubishi Td 04 Turbo that came on the 98's had been replaced with a Garrett. The Garrett turbocharger had absolutely no play in the shaft which leads me to believe it's very recent.
The timing chain tensioner extension was around 13 mm. We have opted to leave the timing chain gears and guides and timing cover alone and stick with replacing the head and the head gasket.
